Ford Motor Co. has agreed with the United Auto Workers union on a new employment contract for its U.S. employees, likely avoiding a strike that cost General Motors Co billions of dollars. As part of the preliminary agreement, Unifor National President Jerry Dias says $1.95 billion $US will be invested in Ford`s Canadian plants, including $1.8 billion $US for the production of five electric vehicles in Oakville, Ont., and an engine contract that could bring new jobs to Windsor, Ont. Experts had expected a preliminary contract with Ford to arrive fairly quickly. GM and UAW had to start from scratch to sign a new four-year contract. Negotiations with Ford – and at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, the last Detroit automaker to negotiate a contract with the union in 2019 – have the advantage of following the gm model. To respect the ratification process, Ford of Canada will not discuss the details of the interim agreement. Ford-UAW presidents from across the country are expected in Dearborn on Friday to clean up the preliminary ratification agreement. The votes would probably be due the following Friday, November 8. The agreement, reached around 3.20 .m after 44 hours of negotiations, must be ratified by the approximately 60,000 UAW members at Ford. If adopted, it would lead to historic negotiations that would have resulted in agreements to make U.S.-based automakers profitable. “While we will not discuss the details of the preliminary agreement until it is final, we believe it is fair to our employees and retirees and paves the way for ford to increase its competitiveness in the United States,” said Joe Laymon, Vice President of Personnel and Labor Affairs for the Ford Group. “Ford can confirm the UAW announcement that UAW and Ford have reached a proposed preliminary agreement on a four-year contract,” Bill Dirksen, Vice President of Laboratory Affairs at Ford, said in a statement. “Further details will be released at a later date.” TORONTO – Unifor`s bargaining committee has reached a historic interim agreement with the Ford Motor Company, which averted a strike on its Canadian operation after extending last night`s midnight deadline and negotiating overnight.
